Artist run shows

Several of the artists in our collective have been involved in the creation of big group shows that are not money making business ventures that exploit artists. We are available to meet with Toronto artists who would like to get involved with this kind of undertaking. Please leave a comment or contact us at admin@artiststoronto.net

The Café Society, a group of artists who gather monthly to commune with one another, socialize and network, are putting together their first group show at Gallery 888 in September. This is a non-for-profit show co-ordinated by Liz Russ, the owner of the gallery and myself, the Café Society organizer, with input and involvement from all the 38 artists
who have committed to showing their work. We realize this venture will be a learning experience for us all. Even coming up with a title that is exciting, and differentiates us from other groups is a challenge with so many artists involved.
All artists will create work 24in. by 24in, unless the work is sculptural or jewelery.
As many of the Café Society artists are also on this web site, we will keep close tabs on the growth and development of both, and report on our successes as we explore new territories and expand on our areas of exposure and experience.

This is just the kind of initiative we need. Good luck with the show, Linda.

This is an update on the Cafe Society Show...
Eighteen artists participated in the name selection and we all agreed on 38 at 888.

We had a more difficult time selecting and image for our post-card. Jocelyn had created a beautiful, classic still life featuring artists materials and a bottle of wine. Our more abstract artists didn't feel it represented their work.

Some felt it was an ad for a wine company, and wanted the wine bottle removed.

The wine represents who we are... a SOCIAL Group, who like to enjoy a glass of wine or beer at our events!!

Listening to the multiple requests and suggestions, we decided to limit those involved in the decision to Liz and myself.

These decisions were being made at Luc's studio/gallery. I remembered a photo he had taken at our November 07 event. It featured a table painted in bright abstract designs covered with food and drink. Luc found the photo on his computer right then and there, and we all agreed it was bright, abstract and represented who we are!

Allan Photo Shopped the image, and it looks great.

Working these issues out has been part of our learning and growing process, in preparing for our first group art show.

As we come into the home stretch before the show we will, I am sure have to deal with other occurrences, but hopefully all will build into an exciting show.
