Restaurant Shows

Have you had a good experience showing your work in restaurants or other non-traditional venues? Do you have any advice for artists? Or do you feel that artists that hang their work in restaurants are simply exploited?

I have several negative experience (long times ago)showing my works at restaurants in Germany and US. Don't let the coffee shops and restaurant's owner cheat poor artists. They get simply free decoration. never costumers look at artworks. Just you will damage your reputation ( if you have !)

Another option to consider: a number of churches show art, usually on a monthly basis, and take a small (often 20 - 25% commission. The clientele includes both the people that attend the church and also those people who participate in church activities and meetings. Hours are usually shorter than gallery hours, but artists don't have to "sit" the show.

Actually I think it depends on the restaurant. I showed a continual series of shows for many years at Avalon Restaurant at John & Adelaide, (closed unfortunately a few years ago). Due to the fine quality of the restaurant and its upscale clientele, I sold a lot of paintings there. It also helped me to develop clientele who attended gallery shows and fed demand for my work at commercial galleries. Plus the owner was very appreciative of art for his walls and didn't expect commission, although I gave him paintings every now and then! So I'd say it really depends on the restaurant, location and ownership.
